107,000 CAPE CORMORANTS AT VELDDRIF!

Posted on the 7th August 2011

Keith Harrison reports as follows:

A new couple to Velddrif seeing our cormorants has experimented with digital photography and time frames calculated that 107,000 birds came in, Sylvia was down for the CWAC and said the sky was black. What was just a joke at the Owl Awards has become serious, Kevin Shaw has been asked to find a way of driving them off the salt pans because they 'smell' - actually the normal smell of concentrated brine in the crystallising pans - and a lady blames them for not being able to sell her house! So Rena and I will have to try and count them when there is the next southerly gale. (they fly in compact skeens and at a constant low height and are countable.)
Regards,
Keith.
