FINDING THE WATER BIRDS

<< Back

Several estuaries give birders direct access to a variety of water birds. These include Botrivier, Onrusrivier, Kleinrivier at Hermanus, Uilenkraalsmond near Gansbaai and De Mond near Arniston. The latter is a haven for waders in summer.

Other significant locations are the Vermont saltpan (in winter and spring) outside Hermanus, Soetendalsvlei and its associated water masses south of Bredasdorp, the De Hoop vlei, the Breede River and Theewaterskloofdam near Villiersdorp. All three Grebes are often encountered and Flamingos and Pelicans move throughout the region. Substantial numbers of Herons, Egrets and Ralians plus a diversity of Ducks and Teals are usually found. Ospreys are often seen in summer.
