THE VILJOENSHOOP, HIGHLANDS ROAD AND VALLEY ROAD LOOP ROAD
There are a number of routes for scenic drives through the natural splendour of the Western Cape. The Viljoenshoop Road to Duncan’s Roses is one of these. In November, the roses are in full bloom and provide spectacular colours and intensities. This route also showcases fynbos and gorgeous pine plantations.

The beautiful Almenkerk Wine Estate is located in a unique spot within the valley that has extremely cold nights. 15 ha of south facing vines are planted to noble cultivars such as Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The Almenkerk family believe that quality wines are made in the vineyard, and to this end they spend a lot of their time in between the vines. Owner Joris van Almenkerk is proud to say: 'We have not made a single compromise on quality and aim for sustainable farming methods.' This sustainability extends from regenerating 20 ha of pristine fynbos on the farm, to educating and therefore empowering their workforce. A state-of-the-art modern cellar and tasting venue look out onto the Kogelberg mountains, where visitors can sample the wines and enjoy the views. The Almenkerk wines consistently win awards in both local and international competitions. The release of an affordable range of wines called 'Lace' complete the package. With a tagline of "Liquid Architecture", this Estate is certainly worth a visit!
Tasting Room Times

Through a tapestry of fynbos and fruit farms this slackpacking trail offers the finest of food and feather beds in the Cape Winelands. Overnight accommodation is in four star country guesthouses . Delicious , wholesome meals are provided throughout. Savouring the ambience of the area with wine tasting and sampling fresh produce from the farms adds to the experience of hiking through the richest plant kingdom in the world.

The Green Mountain Trail is a moderate walking trail with distances varying between 11kms and 18kms each day. The effort level, as guaged by Slackpacker S.A., is set at 3.5 with 5 being the most difficult.

The trail meanders around the Groenlandberg, with spectacular views of Cape Point and the hinterland, through fynbos, orchards and vineyards, and across flatlands peppered with plains game. Guided by THETA accredited guides, experts in their fields, you will learn about the biodiversity and the history of the area. Swimming in rock pools and dams on a hot day is as refreshing for the body as it is for the soul.

The trail traverses privately-owned land. All landowners are members of the Green Mountain Eco Route, the world’s first biodiversity wine route, and part of the region’s efforts to conserve the environment and promote responsible tourism. All members are Biodiversity Wine Initiative champions. This enlightened initiative unites conservation and agricultural development in a complementary, mutually beneficial manner. As part of the Green Mountain Trail’s social responsibility programme, hikers are encouraged to Walk with an Alien, a project in which a personalised walking stick is carved from alien vegetation by local communities.
