BirdLife Overberg member and master photographer Riaan Jacobs joined the crew of Dyer Island Cruises on a pelagic cruise off Kleinbaai on 21 March. Riaan describes it as an unbelievable outing, with hundreds of Atlantic Yellow- Nosed, Black-Browed and Shy Albatrosses being on view. Large flock of Cory`s and Sooty Shearwaters were also present, together with a few Great and Manx Shearwaters. European and Wilson`s Storm-Petrels were abundant and very active and Riaan claims that it took all of his skills to get good images of these brilliant little birds. Several skuas and White-chinned Petrels were also seen regularly. Large numbers of Cape Gannets with many immature birds were also found closer to shore hunting with Bottle-nosed Dolphins.
We decided to post a photo article with a selection of Riaan's lovely images. It is the best time of year to make a reservation to join DICT on one of these pelagic cruises. Contact Hennie Otto at hennie@sharkwatchsa.com or +27 (0)83 295 5307 for details.
