CWAC COUNT ON THE BOTRIVER ESTUARY

Posted on the 15th February 2012

Despite a brief little drizzle the Botriviervlei & Kleinmond Estuary CWAC went very well. We had the best count in years! Bird numbers had picked up well since the artificial breaching on 29 September 2008 and the natural breaching as a result of heavy rains on 14 July 2009, only 5 months after the lagoon has closed after the manual breach. My team and I counted the section from the bridge over the Bot River to the offices of the Benguela Cove wine estate. It was great seeing so many Yellow-billed Ducks (197), Red-knobbed Coot (383), African Fish Eagles (5), Marsh Harriers (3) and Blue Cranes (40) just in the upper reaches of the Botriviervlei. Many of the Blue Cranes were wading through the water, which was quite funny to watch.

Thanks to all the participants. You’ve done a great job, and I’m sure that you had an enjoyable morning’s birding too!

Regards

Mariana
