A WHATSAPP GROUP FOR RARE BIRD SIGHTINGS IN THE OVERBERG

Posted on the 2nd October 2020

Send a WhatsApp request to Steve Peck at 081 817 3223 and include your email address to join this group.

This group has been set up by members of Birdlife Overberg Bird under the guidance of Anton Odendal and will be moderated by Steve Peck.

Its purpose is to alert members of the group to sightings of vagrant, rare and special birds seen in the Overberg region.

To help birders with the type of birds that would fall under these categories, we have provided a list of the birds below we would like you to report any sightings of via this whatsapp group. This list is not exhaustive and will, no doubt, change as birds come and go in our region, so we would also like you to report any other species that might not be on the list that you feel falls into the categories mentioned above.

Once you have the group installed on your cell phone under the WhatsApp name of Overberg Rare Birds all you have to do is send a short message to the group with the name and location of the bird you have seen.

Your message will automatically be forwarded to every other member of the group so alerting them to the bird’s presence.

The sightings and information of birds reported via this group will not only be of great value to birders wishing to compile lists of birds of the Overberg, it will help pinpoint locations for bird photographers, help with conservation data, help attract tourists to the area and go a long way in marketing the region as a top destination for birders.

Rules & Regulations of the group:

• Reports of sightings should only contain the name of the bird and its location. GPS co-ordinates would be extremely useful.
• Please refrain from posting any other information on the group. If you wish further details of location or want to discuss the sighting, please PM the sender.
• Likewise, please refrain from questions or congratulatory comments to the sender - again PM them.
• Please moderate language and keep to the purpose of the group

Anyone who doesn’t continuously abide by these simple rules will be removed from the group
Remember the group’s purpose is solely to report the sighting, with the birds name and location.
The posting of photographs will obviously also help a lot.

Thank you for joining the group, and happy birding!

Anton & Steve
