BIRD IDENTIFICATION AND APPRECIATION HIKES AND DRIVES

Posted on the 21st November 2018

We are receiving several requests for participation in my bird identification and appreciation hikes and drives. We usually do it only once a month, but have decided to do it more regularly over the summer months because of the vast numbers of migrants that have arrived already.

Popular sites that we sometimes visit include the Harderbaai seashore at Onrus for the terns and other coastal birds, the Vermont salt pan for waterbirds and Meer-en-See and/or the Rooisand Nature Reserve for waders. The Karwyderskraal and Swartrivier roads are exceptional for the region’s cisticolas, larks and pipits, as well as most of the other special species associated with Overberg Wheatbelt birding. The Fernkloof Nature Reserve is outstanding for the area’s garden birds and some of the Fynbos specials. And so one could go on …….

Various combinations of packages can be developed depending on what type of birds the participants would like to learn about. The notes of the Flight for Birders course describing the key differences between potentially confusing species will be provided. We also describe in detail how the birdfinder web page for the Cape Whale Coast region work on www.westerncapebirding.co.za – this should enable visitors to enjoy the birds of our region far more effectively. We can also chat about conservation actions aimed at protecting our threatened and vulnerable species if participants so wish. The list of species seen will also be forwarded afterwards.

These educational outings can be done in my vehicle or yours and costs are calculated depending on your specific needs and the time spent out there.

Contact Anton at birding@overberg.co.za or 082 550 3347 to find out more about these exciting outings, or to develop a package to suit your particular needs.

I have a friend out from the UK who is very keen to do some bird watching. Is their a group that we could join in about 2,5 weeks and what would the cost be? Thanks so much.
