REPORT ON FLIGHT FOR BIRDERS COURSE AT SEDGEFIELD, GARDEN ROUTE

Posted on the 29th January 2017

We presented the Flight for Birders identification and conservation course to 50 enthusiastic birders at Sedgefield over the last two days. Seating was unfortunately limited and we had to turn several people away, as had happened at Mossel Bay and George last year. It is evident that there is a rapidly growing interest in birds and birding along the Garden Route. We have now been approached by a tourism officer in Grootbrak to present a course there and we are currently negotiating about a suitable venue and dates and information on this will be released shortly. All birders who could not be accommodated previously will be notified.

Many changes to the course's content have been made over the last two months. Improved images have been incorporated throughout the course and several sections have been reformatted to include more recent research findings and interesting anecdotes. These sections include those on birding tourism, LBJ's, brood parasites, waders, swallows, swifts and martins and bird of prey. We are extremely pleased with the outcomes of these changes and believe that this has added significant value to the course.

Pat Nurse of the Lakes Bird Club was invited to address the group and the hope is expressed that most participants in the course will join the activities of the LBC in future.
The following courses have been confirmed for the next few months:
# Wellington on 9 & 10 February
# Somerset West on 23 & 24 February
# Hermanus on 4 & 5 March
Negotiations are underway for possible courses at Grootbrak, Langebaan, Robertson and Cape Town.

We were very fortunate to have been invited to stay at the Libertas Guest Farm outside Hoekwil. This is a marvelous venue and ideal for a small group of birders. It is very close to the Woodville Big Tree and the Wilderness National Park and the lakes – an ideal spot from which to explore the birding delights of this central part of the Garden Route. Visit their website at: http://www.libertasguestfarm.co.za

We will draft a more comprehensive report of our stay at Libertas later, but first there is the small matter of a week-long stay at Kostaplenti in beautiful Nature's Valley with other members of BirdLife Overberg.

An excellent two days. Tons of information (still being processed) made so much more manageable with Dr Odendal's tips. Thank you!

Just love that you had to turn people away after you have a full house!
