(From SA Rare Bird News on 7 August 2014. - Ed.)
Starting in the Western Cape, there was some surprise late yesterday afternoon at Pan P4 at Strandfontein Sewage Works when observers were enjoying the FRANKLIN'S GULL and subsequently realized they were looking in different directions at "the bird".! Once they had realized this, it didn't take long to work out that there were actually 2 individuals there and they then set about trying to get a photo where both individuals were in the same frame, one of which is included below. There have been suspicions recently that there may have been 2 individuals present just based on the erratic sightings of the birds at various pans at very similar times, but it is nice to now finally get it confirmed. Both birds were still present there earlier today. Elsewhere in the province, no fewer than 3 GOLIATH HERONS were located at Verlorenvlei at Eland’s Bay yesterday all seen on the northern side of the vlei from the Piketberg – Eland’s Bay road.
