HOW TO PREPARE WHEN PLANNING TO BIRD ALONG PARTS OF THE CAPE WEST COAST
Posted on the 7th December 2013
(This illustrates how the BIRDFINDER WEBPAGES for the CAPE WEST COAST can be used when planning how to bird in the region. - Ed.)
I am uncertain on how you guys want to travel, eg self-catering or not. Herewith some ideas - once you had looked through it you can get back to me and I will add "some flesh to the skeleton". I will bring you copies of my West Coast brochure (Inclusive of map) when I do the F4B course at Plett at the end of January.
First go to the CapeWest Coast Birding Route webpages here:
Then I suggest some places to consider (Read under the headings in the drop-down menus and remember that these drop-downs often include detailed trip reports, etc):
Saldanha Bay Local Municipal Region: SALDANHA TO VELDDRIF. If you like what you read here I can suggest (depending on how you want to stay) several places in either JACOBSBAAI or PATERNOSTER
You should spend time along the Bergrivier estuary at VELDDRIF, possibly two nights. The new chalets at ROCHERPAN have received rave reviews - get referals in the drop-down menus. This is very central to Velddrif where you must do "BOKKOM ALLEY" in the early morning armed with your camera. Take in a breakfast or lunch at one of the restaurants there and ensure that you chat to 'die wille manne van die bokkom fabrieke' - they ARE THE WEST COAST! You may also want to consider a half a day at AURORA (see under Porterville to Velddrif). Or do it the other way around: stay at Aurora (look at Mountain Mist Nature Reserve) and visit Velddrif and Rocherpan from there.
There is now accommodation available at VERLORENVLEI: look at VLEIKRAAL
Lots of options for LAMBERTSBAY: yes they have the Gannets and fishermen folk if you are interested in that sort of thing - just let me know. I would however recommend that you consider CLANWILLIAM and go to the Gannets for half a day. Investigate KRANSVLEI POORT 10 km south of Clanwilliam.
I will assist with a more formal itinerary once you had done a bit of research and you had decided what you want to do and what not.
Just let me know.
