To all Pelican Watch Volunteers,

On behalf of the cormorants and gannets and kelp gulls of Jutten and Malgas and of West Coast SANParks and their Honorary Ranger group, sincere thanks for your time and effort, so willingly and cheerfully donated to the 2011 / 12 Pelican Watch program. Also our appreciation of your concern for and commitment to the welfare of the sea birds of the West Coast that motivated your participation this past season. Yours was a great combined effort that has ensured that a new generation of sea birds will go out there this year to do their thing. We know, from past experience and present economic realities, that without your selfless contribution to SANPark’s management program this would not happen. Well done and thank you.

Volunteers doing individual shifts on the islands probably do not get the feeling of being part of a bigger team. With the idea of providing an overall perspective the Honor Roll for the past season is attached below. We also intend to put together the pelican chasing statistics for the past season and will circulate these later. A bigger project that we are hoping to take on soon is the compilation of all the statistics from the beginning of the program in 2008. This would highlight trends in the pelican presence and give some impression of the effects that our efforts are having.

Finally, the West Coast Honorary Rangers are proposing to allocate part of their 2012 budget to maintenance work and improvements to the accommodations on the islands. Within the constraints of limited funds and the high cost and logistical difficulties of working on the islands our priorities will be:

  1. installing waterless toilets on both islands (do I hear a cheer go up?)

  2. restoring functional plumbing on both islands

  3. providing additional sleeping accommodation on Jutten

  4. replacing the lookout ladder on Malgas

  5. re-establishing solar power on Malgas.

Any constructive ideas from any of you for improving things on the islands, possible sources of sponsorship for the necessary work, ways and means of getting the job done and so on, would be appreciated. Please let us have your thoughts.

We expect that the Park will put together the roster for the 2012 / 13 Pelican Watch program some time in June. We will distribute this to you when it becomes available so that anyone who would like to join us again will be able to plan in good time.

With best wishes from the Pelican Watch organising group,

Alec and Janet Celliers, Pam Rutledge, Colin Codner

Alec, Janet, Pam & Colin: I want to personally thank you for your dedication - well done folks. I will spend the rest of the night thinking on how we could start some sort of fund-raiser to get sustainability going for your project. Groete. Anton
