CWAC COUNT AT PAARL BIRD SANTUARY - JUNE 2010

Paarl Bird Sanctuary (PBS) June CWAC: A team of 9 bird monitors completed the monthly count on Saturday 26 June. Some highlights were the Malachite Kingfishers that brightened the day in several places, a Black Crake on the island in pan C, a pair of African Black Duck on the Kingfisher pan and the ongoing breeding by Hartlaubs and Grey-headed Gulls with most of the nests on the embankment between pans E2 and E3. Hartlaubs Gulls were sitting on 78 nests and Grey-headed Gulls on 15 nests, with numerous chicks at different stages of development also present. The total gull count over all the pans was close to 1000 of which about 90% were Hartlaubs and 10% Grey-headed. The Goliath Heron that was present on the May CWAC was not detected. Over weekends the pans are patrolled by security guards with dogs. In spite of ongoing construction at the works the PBS is still an excellent birding venue.
