Nature’s Valley Outing – Dawn Pearce
(This report first appeared in the November 2014 edition of the BirdLife Plettenberg Bay newsletter. - Ed.)
The outing to Nature’s Valley on the 18th October 2014 proved to be very popular as usual, with a large number of members and their guests turning up for the walk and social braai. There were so many people at the function that the walk was divided up into three groups, with Geoff leading the main group and Mike, Bruce and Wayne looking after the others.
The birding was typical forest type with many birds identified by sound only, with fleeting glimpses of Trogons and Flycatchers.
Some of the birds recorded were - Le Vaillent’s Cisticola, Speckled Mousebird, Greater Striped Swallow, Red Eyed Dove, Cape Turtle Dove, Cape Wagtail, Lazy Cisticola, Knysna Turaco, Egyptian Goose, Sombre Greenbul, Collared Sunbird, Amethyst Sunbird, Grey Sunbird, Chorister Robin Chat, Black Headed Oriole, Puffback , Southern Double Collared Sunbird, Cape White Eye, Blue Mantled Flycatcher, Dusky Flycatcher, Paradise Flycatcher, Olive Thrush, Cape Batis, Emerald Cuckoo, Scaly Throated Honeyguide, Black Sawwing, Yellow Throated Woodland Warbler, Green Backed Cameroptera, Forest Buzzard, Terrestrial Brownbul, Green Wood Hoepoe, Bar Throated Apalis, Half Collared Kingfisher, Grey Cuckoo Shrike, White Necked Raven, Red Chested Cuckoo, Southern Boubou, Olive Bushshrike, Fork Tailed Drongo, Hadeda Ibis, Narina Trojan, Reed Cormorant, Yellow Billed Duck, Pied Kingfisher, Red Necked Spurfowl, Swee Waxbill, Black Oystercatcher, Kelp Gull, Forest Canary.
Apart from the good birding, the walk and the social braai under the trees in the De Vassalot Camp site was most enjoyable, and gave everyone the opportunity to catch up on their travel adventures, general birding and other activities.
