BLACK-COLLARED BARBETS NEAR NATURE'S VALLEY – GARETH ROBBINS
(This report first appeared in the November 2014 edition of the BirdLife Plettenberg Bay newsletter. - Ed.)
I was guiding a client yesterday when we stopped on the way to Nature's Valley to look at Black-winged Lapwings with a chick on the farmland opposite the Moreson Farm along the R340. While viewing the Lapwings I heard Black-collared Barbets calling. We immediately followed the call and saw a pair of Black-collared Barbets in a Keurboom Tree on the left hand side of the dirt track.
Peter and Judy Wilson, local dairy farmers and owner of the Nature’s Way Farm Store [Ed. the best cup of coffee in Plett! ] said to me that they have been there for about a year now.
Directions:
If you take the R340 to Natures Valley, you will cross the Salt River Bridge, soon after you will see the sign for the Moreson Farm on the Right hand side. Directly opposite this sign is a small dirt road that you can follow. The Barbets were seen moving all along this road in the taller trees. No access to private property is needed as they were seen from a public road. We first heard them around 6:40 am this Morning (29th October 2014)
