Bruce Ward-Smith photographed a Western Osprey [new name] from the Bitou River Bridge on the 27th July 2012. Usually they are not around in winter, so he asks if other members see them regularly.
The Western Osprey is an uncommon Palearctic non-breeding migrant. However, we have regularly seen a single bird all year, and it has been recorded on both winter and summer CWAC counts. There have been some unconfirmed reports of two birds.
There are a few sporadic breeding records in Southern Africa, and members are asked to look at these birds carefully, and see whether there are in fact two birds, and then see if they are attempting to nest.
