THE SALDANHA BAY AREA

SAS SALDANHA NATURE RESERVE
SAS Saldanha Nature reserve is managed by the SANDF. Trails are open 7 days a week and it is best to visit from August to December.
Good site for marine species, terrestrial birds and birds of prey. ,br>
SPECIALS: Cape Penduline Tit, Namaqua Sandgrouse, Black-crowned Night-Heron
Approval required before entry.
JACOBSBAAI AND MAURITZ BAY
These two bays that are accessed off the road between Saldanha and Vredenburg are rapidly becoming known as birding hotspots particularly
as far as terns are concerned. Recent sightings include Arctic and Antarctic Terns as well as Franklin’s Gull.
VREDENBURG / SALDANHA GOLF COURSE:
There are 2 hides overlooking a dam on the northern boundary of the course. It is accessed of the R45 and is well worth a visit. Good site for
Greater Painted Snipe.
THE PENINSULA DRIVE (Vredenburg - Paternoster - Cape Colombine - St Helena Bay - Velddrif)
Birds that are reported along this route regularly include Burchell’s Coursers, Sickle-winged Chats, Pale Chanting Goshawks, Greater Kestrels,
Spotted Eagle-Owls and Pied Avocets. In winter, there is a llarge roost of Antarctic Terns at Cape Colombine, just west of Paternoster.
Britannica Heights in St Helena Bay is known as “five llarks country”: a steep incline to the reservoir at the top of the hill gives birders
the opportunity to test their identification skills at trying to identify all five species of larks that are found here.
