THE COASTAL FYNBOS ROUTE - YZERFONTIEN/DARLING

<< Back

THE DARLING FARMLANDS
The area around Darling and Yzerfontein is highly underrated for birding and includes a number of birding sites and great wine estates. Recommended places to visit include Grootepost wine estate, Darling Hills road and Waylands Wildflower reserve. The latter is open to the public in August and September. The area offers a variety of bush and open country species and is well known for its large flocks of European Bee-eaters during summer.

THE TIENIE VERSVELD NATURE RESERVE
This small reserve is well known for its massive display of flowers in spring and provides excellent birding throughout the year, particularly for those interested in larks, longclaws and pipits.

THE AFMINE GYPSUM MINE
The mine is signposted off the R315 to Yzerfontein 4 kms past the junction with the R27 and is on the edge of the vast salt pan. Obtain permission to enter from the mine office and proceed to the edge of the pan on foot - take the warning notices of quick sand seriously. A well known breeding site for Chestnut-banded Plovers.

DASSEN ISLAND
It is well worth to take a cruise around the island to observe seabirds, but this needs to be organised through CapeNature at l least two hours in advance. Contact Chris van Wyk at 022-4512038 or 0827778925.

!KWATTU SAN CULTURAL VILLAGE
Clearly signposted off the R27 and offers a unique cultural and educational experience. San guided walking trails are available and the birding is very good. Contact General Manager at 022-4922298 or e-mail at sancentre@visualnet.co.za
