BIRDING ALONG THE N7 TO CAPE TOWN

<< Back

The western slopes of the mountain passes east of Clanwilliam 5.1 (Pakhuis pass) and Citrusdal (Middelberg pass) are excellent places to see the montane specials. A visit to Wuppertal comes highly recommended. Several of the mountain fynbos specials and arid karoo specials are to be found here.

Further south at Porterville there is a Blue Crane route that is well worth the detour off the N7. Take the circular route from Porterville along the R365 to the Cardouw road along the base of the Olifantsriver Mountains and back to the R365 and Porterville. The Blue Cranes have arrived in this area fairly recently and this is the best region along the West Coast where these birds could be found, often in large numbers. Other species that could be found along the roadside include Capped Wheatear, Familiar Chat, Stonechat and a variety of canaries.

The so-called “Riebeeck Valley” that include the towns of Riebeeck West and Riebeek Kasteel is fast becoming known for its top birding. There are several conservation groups working in the area and it is expected that these inputs will lead to this area becoming known as a birding hotspot.

There are many dams and pans along the N7 where water birds are in abundance and it is recommended that visitors travel fairly slowly and be very cautious when pulling off the road.
