INTERESTING COMMENTS ON FORK-TAILED DRONGOS AT STELLENBOSCH
While watching two Fork-tailed Drongos hawking insects here at our work place in Stellenbosch (-33.919815, 18.868955) yesterday,9 June 2010, I thought I’ll check the SABAP data for this bird in our area as we have seen small flocks or individuals every month this year and most months last year.
Our workplace falls in QDGC 3318DD and pentad 3355_1850
It was interesting to note that in the final report for SABAP1 only 1 record for Fork-tailed Drongo exists, recorded in October, for the QDGC. In contrast Fork-tailed Drongo now appears on 69 Full Protocol Cards, 2 Ad Hoc cards and 2 Incidental Sightings for QDGC 3318DD. Of these 33-2-2 was for pentad 3355_1850 so the pentad contributed about 50% of the records of Fork-tailed Drongo for the QDGC
Comparing the SABAP1 and SABAP2 maps even at this “early stage” the westerly movement of this bird is quite clear. If we see a constant westerly movement of birds pretty “soon” we will not have to travel to the “bushveld” for birding as all their birds will be right here in our backyard. Fortunately most of “our” birds cannot move westward as there is a big ocean there.
