A SUNDAY MORNING AT SEEBERG HIDE

The Cape Bird Club outing to the West Coast National Park today (Sunday 14 March 2010), with Vernon Head as the leader was most successful. Thanks to Vernon for all his efforts to make sure nobody missed out on any sighting. The timing of the tide at the Geelbek hide was not quite as expected, possibly the South East wind took the water out faster, and the waders were soon quite a distance away from the hide.

As the tide was pushing in at the Seeberg Hide the waders came in in large flocks, many waders already showing their breeding plumage. There were Grey Plovers, Sanderlings, Curlew Sandpipers, Red Knots, Bar-tailed Godwits, Whimbrels, Little Stints and Common Ringed Plovers and a variety of Terns.

The special birds which were lifers for several members were Lesser Sand Plover, Terek Sandpiper, Broad-billed Sandpiper, very busy feeding up and down the waterline, and spotted by John Graham, and then the Mega rare bird, the Hudsonian Godwit, which obligingly eventually landed on the sandbank in front of the hide, at about 14h00. Very good clear views were had by all and excellent photos were taken.

We were fortunate that the wind did not become become too strong at Seeberg and altogether weather-wise a pleasant day.
