THE GETTING MORE OUT OF BIRDING LECTURE SERIES: FOREST BIRDING IN THE WESTERN CAPE
Happening on the 26th October 2020
The online FLYING HIGHER bird identification and appreciation series continues with individual talks highlighting top bird-watching destinations. The GETTING MORE OUT OF BIRDING LECTURE SERIES is aimed at assisting visitors and locals alike to enjoy birding at specific regions, National Parks and nature reserves. The rationale behind this series is to highlight many brilliant species to be found at these localities in the comfort of one’s home and to give guidelines on how to prepare for visits to these wonderful places. The ninth talk in this series is on Monday 26 October and will focus on birding opportunities at some of the Western Cape’s top forest birding destinations: Nature’s Valley, Ebb & Flow at the Wilderness National Park and the Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve.
Very few people are aware of the excellent forest birding opportunities that are available at some destinations in the Western Cape Province. Nature’s Valley, Ebb & Flow at the Wilderness National Park and the Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve near Swellendam merely serve as examples of areas where outstanding bird-watching opportunities are available. A diverse range of brilliant and often endemic bird species can be observed and photographed at these and other sites, if enough patience is applied – forest birding is often difficult and a strain on the neck. The talk highlights several sought-after species to look for and provides tips on how to find them.
The talk will illustrate some of the special and often endemic species that one can expect to find at these sites and a few critical conservation issues related to these species will be discussed briefly. The talk is also supported with extensive notes describing many other species that are not featured and this will be forwarded to all registered participants.
