Happening on the 3rd April 2020

This is the first announcement of the BirdLife Overberg charity golf day to be presented at the Hermanus Golf Club on Friday 3 April 2020. This follows the same format as previous successful charity golf days and will be in aid of the club’s CleanMarine campaign. In the past we had donated R 30,000 to each of Wilfred Chivell of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust and Dale Wright of BirdLife South Africa. These donations were a part of funds raised through previous BirdLife Overberg charity golf days. This illustrated announcement will firstly look at the projects for which funds are being raised and then give details of how you could get involved.

The BirdLife Overberg Golf Day 2019 aims to raise funds to sustain the club’s CleanMarine campaign. Members of BirdLife Overberg decided to prioritise future fund-raising and conservation efforts. For this reason it was decided to focus our efforts on the Overstrand region’s coastline and estuaries. A workshop on this was presented in September 2017 in collaboration with the Nature’s Valley Conservation Trust (NVT). Many of the region’s role-players showcased their projects at the workshop and Dr Mark Brown of the NVT conducted a final brainstorming session - six projects were identified. The projects are being done as case-studies that are reported to the Western Cape Birding Forum regularly in view of other clubs possibly implementing similar actions in their regions.

Specific CleanMarine projects for which funds are being raised through the Charity Golf day 2020:

• The monitoring and protection of key breeding sites of African Black Oystercatchers and White-fronted Plovers on beaches along the Cape Whale Coast forms the basis of our campaigns. Education and awareness campaigns in this regard are largely based on the development, printing and installation of posters, placards and warning signs initially developed by the NVT and now being adapted for our region. Information brochures that will form the backbone of ongoing media campaigns are also being produced. The sourcing of funding for the development of these educational information resources represents the vast majority of current fundraising efforts.

Example of poster at Sedgefield explaining the zoning of beaches for dogs: an issue that needs serious consideration along our beaches in the Overstrand region as well

• Monthly coastal clean-ups to collect marine plastics and other litter at specific problem areas along the Cape Whale Coast shoreline have already been done over the last eighteen months. This is being done in collaboration with a several agencies and funds are also being raised to sustain and equip volunteers.

The other projects forming part of the CleanMarine campaign for which funding is not currently required are: 1. Quarterly Co-ordinated Waterbird Counts (CWAC) in collaboration with BirdLife South Africa, CapeNature and other organisations. 2. The distribution of bins to collect fishing line along our coastline in association with the Dyer Island Conservation Trust and Plastics SA. 3. Qualitative research into the problem of the littering of cigarette butts. 4. Specific environmental education campaigns mostly aimed at the youth.
