BIRDLIFE OVERBERG 2019: PROVISIONAL SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Happening from the 16th February 2019 to 7th December 2019

Herewith the provisional dates for outings, monthly meetings and other events during 2019 in view of members diarising these. Further decisions regarding morning and weekend outings, as well as guest speakers at monthly meetings to be taken by those members responsible for these portfolios: 

Thursday 10 January: Celebrating terns at De Mond Nature Reserve

Saturday 19 January: Morning outing to Arabella Estate and the Rooiels site with Anton Odendal as group leader

Monday 21 January: MONTHLY TALK – Anton Odendal on the Secretarybird as the BirdLife South Africa Bird of the Year

Saturday 9 February: CWAC Counts along the Botvlei estuary

Monday 21 January: MONTHLY TALK – Anton Odendal on the Secretarybird as the BirdLife South Africa Bird of the Year

Saturday 9 February: CWAC Counts along the Botvlei estuary

Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 February: Flight for Birders course in Hermanus

Monday 11 February: MONTHLY TALK – AGM and overview of the CleanMarine report for 2018

Saturday 16 February: BLO monthly coastal clean-up along the first section of the beautiful Hoek van de Berg Nature Reserve. We will meet at the parking area of the OK in Onrus at 07:30. RSVP with Elaine at Elaine at mwjasser@mweb.co.za or sms or WhatsApp at 082 455 8402

Saturday 23 February: BLO Quarterly BIG BIRD COUNT. In November we managed to get most areas in the Overberg covered, except for the central Hermanus area of Fernkloof, the Hermanus cliff path and Prawn Flats – please support us with this one. Details will be released soon

Saturday 9 March: BLO monthly coastal clean-up from Davies Pool in Onrus to Brekfisbaai in Vermont 

Monday 11 March: MONTHLY TALK – Carin Malan on birding in Zululand

Saturday 16 March: MORNING OUTING – Viljoenshof and Rietfontein with Riaan Jacobs as group leader. (This is on the western end of the Agulhas National Park).

Saturday 6 April: MORNING OUTING – We visit Jessie Walton’s hides in the Elgin Valley with Carin Malan as group leader

Friday 5 April to Sunday 7 April: POSSIBLE WEEKEND OUTING – DESTINATION TO BE CONFIRMED: Volunteer needed to organise such a weekend

Monday 8 April: MONTHLY TALK – Wilfred Chivell on birding along the islands around New Zealand. 

Saturday 13 April: BLO monthly coastal clean-up along the second section of the Hoek van de Berg Nature Reserve

Saturday 4 May: Provisional date for CWAC counts

Saturday 11 May: BLO monthly coastal clean-up around the Vermont salt pan and a section of road verge along the R43 at Vermont – we will need a large group to assist with this one

Saturday 11 May: BLO Quarterly BIG BIRD COUNT

Monday 13 May: MONTHLY TALK – Ferdie Endemann will present the non-birding talk of the year when he will focus on cycad conservation. 

Note that another Pelagic Encounters cruise with Marine Dynamics is being considered for a clear day in May or June – the final decision on a date will obviously be weather dependant. 

(A weekend outing could be arranged during this period: Volunteer needed to organise such a weekend)

Saturday 8 June: BLO monthly coastal clean-up on WORLD OCEANS DAY – We will clean the coastal area between Onrus beach and Sandbaai. 

Monday 10 June: MONTHLY TALK – BIRDLIFE OVERBERG FUN BIRD QUIZ

Saturday 15 June: MORNING OUTING – We will visit the Napier district with Steve Peck as group leader

Saturday 13 July: MORNING OUTING – Destination and date to be confirmed given the weather

Thursday 18 July – Mandela Day: Many agencies do coastal clean-ups as part of the 87 minutes – should we not consider this for a coastal clean-up and cancel 20 July? 

Saturday 20 July: BLO monthly coastal clean-up along the first section of the beautiful Hoek van de Berg Nature Reserve

Saturday 27 July: XMAS IN JULY FUNDRAISING DINNER

Monday 12 August: MONTHLY TALK – Richard Masson to talk on birding in Swaziland. 

Thursday 15 August: MORNING OUTING – Overberg wheatbelt and canola birding in the Greyton district with Anton Odendal as group leader

Saturday 17 August: BLO monthly coastal clean-up from Davies Pool in Onrus to Brekfisbaai in Vermont

Saturday 24 August: MORNING OUTING – Visit to I&J tern roost at Danger Point with Antarctic and Roseate Terns as target species – Richard Masson as group leader

Saturday 31 August and Sunday 1 September: Specialist course – Details to be announced

Saturday 7 September: MORNING OUTING – We visit Jessie Walton’s hides in the Elgin Valley with Carin Malan as group leader

Saturday 14 September: BLO monthly coastal clean-up on INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEAN-UP DAY along the second section of the Hoek van de Berg Nature Reserve

Saturday 12 October: MORNING OUTING – We visit the De Mond Nature Reserve with Steve Peck as group leader

Monday 14 October: MONTHLY TALK – Speaker to be confirmed

Thursday 17 October: MORNING OUTING – Fernkloof Nature Reserve – Volunteer still needed to lead the group

Saturday 19 October: BLO monthly coastal clean-up along the Mosselrivier coastal area

Saturday 26 October: MORNING OUTING – Cruise on the Lady Stanford from the village with Richard Masson as group leader

Sunday 20 to Sunday 27 October: The annual midweek tour to Kostaplenti in Nature’s Valley with Anton Odendal as group leader 

Saturday 2 November: Provisional date for CWAC counts

Saturday 16 November: MORNING OUTING – We visit Witkrans, the Danger point peninsula and other great birding sites in the Gansbaai region with Riaan Jacobs as group leader

Saturday 23 November: YEAR-END FUNCTION – We will again highlight photographs of some of our top photographers

Saturday 30 November: BLSA BIRDING BIG DAY and BLO Quarterly BIG Bird Count

Saturday 30 November: The monthly coastal clean-up around the Vermont salt pan and a section of road verge along the R43 at Vermont – we will need a large group to assist with this one
