FORTHCOMING BIRDLIFE OVERBERG EVENTS FOR 2018 – PROVISIONAL SCHEDULE
The following dates have been provisionally confirmed for those members wanting to plan their year. This schedule will gradually be completed as details of guest speakers, outings and other events are finalised.
# WEEKEND MORNING OUTING: Saturday 18 August – BirdLife Overberg’s quarterly Mini Birding Big Day
# WEEKDAY MORNING OUTING: Thursday 23 August – Birding in the Greyton district during canola season.
# Saturday 25 August: Monthly BLO coastal cleanup at the Hoek van de Berg Nature Reserve (First section)
# 1 and 2 September – David Allan, the curator of birds at the Durban Natural Science Museum, will present a specialist LBJ identification course and will also highlight some issues related to our vultures to coincide with International Vulture Awareness Day. See details under events and reserve your spot now to avooid missing out
# WEEKEND MORNING OUTING: Saturday 8 September - Morning outing to Fernkloof Nature Reserve and the monthly BirdLife Overberg coastal cleanup - site to be confirmed
# MONTHLY TALK: Monday 10 September – Jenny Parsons and Anton will celebrate the African Oystercatcher as bird of the year and focus on the extended period during which the nests need to be protected
# Friday 14 to Monday 17 September: BirdLife Overberg weekend outing to the Gourikwa Reserve, Gouritz district, Garden Route
# Saturday 15 September: International Coastal Clean-up Day - we are planning a huge effort for this day.
# WEEKDAY MORNING OUTING: Thursday 27 September – Steve Peck will lead another exciting outing to the Nuwejaarsrivier wetlands system near the Agulhas National Park
# MONTHLY TALK: Monday 8 October – Pieter van Oudthoorn is to talk about the birds of Alaska and Argentina. " Pieter's love of travelling and his keen interest in birding has taken him to some wonderful locations around the world. He will talk to us about his marathon birding road trip from northern Alaska right down to the southern tip of South America. The emphasis will be on the birds of the two extremities viz. Alaska and Argentina."
# WEEKEND MORNING OUTING: Saturday 13 October – Provisional date for a birding cruise on the Lady Stanford along the Klein River. An alternative date has been set for 27 October if the weather does not play along on the 13th.
# Saturday 20 October: Monthly BLO coastal cleanup at the Hoek van de Berg Nature Reserve (Second section)
# WEEKDAY MORNING OUTING: Tuesday 23 October – We visit the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens
# WEEKEND MORNING OUTING: Saturday 27 October - Alternative date for a birding cruise on the Lady Stanford along the Klein River if the weather does not play along on 13 October.
# WEEKEND MORNING OUTING: Saturday 3 November - Morning outing to the Elgin open gardens event and Jessie Walton's dams
# WEEKDAY MORNING OUTING: Thursday 8 November – A dawn chorus morning outing to Witkrans and Platbos Forest
