WEST COAST NATIONAL PARK WADER BASH 2018

Happening from the 16th February 2018 to 18th February 2018


The date for the Wet Coast Wader Bash 2018 has been set for 16 - 18 February 2018.

This a fun-filled weekend, excellent bird watching, good food, camaraderie and gentle competition provides a unique opportunity to experience the abundant and varied bird life of the RAMSAR classified Langebaan Lagoon and the surrounding West Coast National Park.
The event starts with a briefing on Friday evening with the count starting at 17.45 and finishing at 17.45 on Saturday. All levels of birding expertise, from beginners to experts, are catered for and participant teams of 4 will be lead and guided by experienced birders familiar with all the best spotting sites. This weekend of great team work can be rewarded with many special prizes which will be handed out at the West Coast Dinner on the Saturday evening. Sunday morning will see 2 well-known ornithologists entertaining you.

The West Coast region of the SANParks Honorary Rangers invites you to theWCNP Wader Bash 2018 at the West Coast National Park.

The Wader Bash Weekend itself is a prestigious event and you can be assured of real West Coast hospitality for the duration of your stay and participation.

To ensure that you will have an enjoyable and unforgettable stay with us we would like to share the following information with you. Where applicable make use of this information to complete your registration form.
DATES
• Onsiteregistration will start on Friday, 16th February 2018 from 13:00 at Geelbek Environmental Centre. Please meet at 17:00 at the hall for briefing.
• The official starting time of the competition will be at 17.45 on 16th February 2018.
• The official closing time of the competition will be at 17.45 on 17th February 2018.
• Counting will officially start at 17.50 on 17th February 2018.
• The dinner and presentation of prizes will take place at the Geelbek Environmental Centreat 19.00 for 19:30 on Saturday, 17th February 2018. Pre-dinner drinks will be available in the tent/bar at the stables.
• There will be a fire lit at Geelbek Environmental Centre for those who would like to braai on the Friday evening (16th February) when they come in from birding.
• Lectures will take place at the Geelbek Environmental Centre at the Stables from 09:00 on Sunday, 18th February 2018.
• Advance entry booking is imperative as the WCNP only has accommodation for approximately 25 participants. For those residing out of the WCNP stables there is space available. Please contact: Noeline on 072 2500045 or Pamela on 071 1602811, waderbash.wcnp@gmail.com

VENUE
• The competition will take place within the boundaries of the West Coast National Park.
ENTRANCE
• Entrance fees will be charged to access the WCNP unless you present your Wild Card.
ACCOMMODATION
The following options are available for accommodation.
Geelbek Environmental Centre – Converted stables with bunks.
• Accommodation will be allocated on a “first come first served” basis.
• Due to limited facilities at the park accommodation might have to be shared. Please feel free to discuss this with Noeline or Pamela when making your reservation.
• This accommodation is covered in your registration fee.
• Bring your own bedding.

Should you wish to stay at the chalets you are liable for your own booking and accommodation fees.(A reduction of R100 per night, a total of R200.00will be made to Birding Weekend Fee).
MEALS
The West Coast dinner and presentation of prizes will take place at the Geelbek Environmental Centre at 19.00 for 19:30on Saturday, 17th February 2018. Pre-dinner drinks in the tent/bar at the stables.
The dinneris part of the entry fee. (Non-participants – R200.00)
• All other meals, including the Friday night bring-and-braai are self-catering. Please bring all your own crockery, cutlery etc.
• A communal kitchen is available at the Stables with fridge/freezer facilities.
• The restaurant at Geelbek is open for breakfast and lunch.

REGISTRATION is between 13:00 and 16:45 on Friday, 16th February 2018

BRIEFING SESSION: 17:00 in Geelbek Eco –Education centre

THE GAME starts at 17:45 on Friday 16th Februaryand finishes at 17:45 on Saturday 17thFebruary 2018.

THE OBJECT is to go out into the West Coast National Park and identify as many bird species as you can within the twenty four hours of the game. As well as the competitive nature of the game participants are encouraged to have fun and enjoy the Park, the people and the educational aspects of the Game.

THE TEAMS are groups of +/- four participants and an experienced bird guide. You can either make up your own team or you will be teamed up with other players. Some of the teams are made up of interested Matric students from local schools.

A GUIDE will be assigned to each team and will show you the “best” spots in the Park to see particular birds and if your group is a novice group you will be assisted in acquiring bird identification techniques.

PRIZES go to the team that spots the highest number of bird species and also to the individual who spots and identifies the “best”, most unusual or rarest bird in the Park as decided by the judges (Rarity prize). Please Note: The judges’ decision is final

THE RULES of the Game will be given to all participants at registration on Friday.
