The “Oystercatcher Hero of the Month award” was created to honour community members or organisations that make significant contributions to the conservation of our coastline and estuaries. This forms part of BirdLife Overberg’s CleanMarine campaign on the conservation of the Cape Whale Coast estuaries and coastline. Recipients receive a certificate and a year’s free membership of BirdLife Overberg. They are also given extensive coverage on our website, the regional media and our Facebook pages.
Previous recipients include Narina Howard of the Zwelihle Recycle Swop Shop, Colleen Ratz of the Onrus Litter Ladies, Antonio Da Silva-Swart of the Coastal Cleanup Conservation Trust and Michael Raimondo owner of the Hoek van de Berg Nature Reserve and Green Renaissance.

The deserved recipient of the Oystercatcher Hero Award for July is Pinkey Ngewu of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust. As Administrator at DICT, Pinkey handles day to day operations and fundraising, but her key passion lies in education. Her work with the DICT’s Environmental Education Programme (DEEP) is having an impact on the students with who she works long term. The Dyer Island Conservation Trust’s Environmental Education Programme known as DEEP works with dedicated groups of young learners from a disadvantaged background and runs for three years to monitor and evaluate the impact and growth of each and every individual learner. Its aim is to expose these young learners to the field of science and conservation and serve as a forerunner for future skills training. An education manual (DEEP BLUE MANUAL) for the second year students has been created to enhance the learning programme.

Pinkey is a worthy recipient of this prestigious award and will be honoured at BirdLife Overberg’s annual Xmas in July fundraising dinner to be held on Saturday 28 July.
