HELP NEEDED TO UNDERSTAND THE FLIGHT PATHS OF GREAT WHITE PELICANS

Posted on the 8th September 2013

Great White Pelican flocks

We are currently studying the movements of Great White Pelicans in relation to a wind energy project proposal on the Cape West Coast. We are focussing on pelicans commuting between Dassen Island (where they breed) and mainland feeding sites to the south of the island.

Clearly, an important feeding area for these birds at the moment is the Vissershok landfill site just north of Rietvlei.

To help us to understand the main flight paths used by these birds, we are looking for other feeding sites (waterbodies, pig-farms…?) regularly being visited by flocks of 20 pelicans or more.

If you know of any such sites, please communicate details (locations, dates, times and numbers of birds seen) to:

Andrew Jenkins (andrew@avisense.co.za / 082 959 9238),

Johan du Plessis (johandp@ncc-group.co.za / 0723429798) or

Robin Colyn (robinc@ncc-group.co.za / 0768338454).
