Invasive species: Mallard Control Programme

· Hanneline Smit attended a National Problem Bird Forum meeting at EWT offices on 31 October. This meeting included a follow up on responsibilities that resulted from the Mallard Workshop that was held on 29 July at Hebron Haven, KwaZulu-Natal.

· A proposal is being developed to fund a national position, which will report to Hanneline Smit in order to run the National Mallard Control Programme. The proposal will be submitted to Debbie Sharp, Department of Natural Resource Management Programmes (NRMP), Department of Environmental Affairs, who attended the Mallard workshop on 29 July, who supports the need for an active control programme.

· Hanneline Smit and Louise Stafford are drafting a document to explain the “science”, and associated problems in layman terms of genetic hybridization of Mallards with indigenous ducks, and this will be used in publicity material.

· A fundraising campaign to “Save our Indigenous Ducks” will be launched. The publicity material will be developed by Kay Montgomery from Environmental Resource Management.
