SECREATRY BIRD & HOODED VULTURE NOW GLOBALLY THREATENED

Posted on the 17th June 2011

FYI - Following the recent release of the 2011 IUCN Red List update, you will note that two of the big African birds (Secretarybird and Hooded Vulture) were up-listed to join the list of globally threatened species. Further, 4 species in the islands of Sao Tome & Principe were uplisted to higher threat categories (3 joined the list of globally threatened species). In fact the Principe Thrush is now considered Critically Endangered, the highest level of threat.

Thanks for the update on the threatened status of Secretarybirds. My sighting of one striding through our fynbos this past weekend is therefore all the more special. This was just my 3rd sighting of this regal bird in almost 10 years here on our reserve.
