TERNS ALONG THE CAPE WEST COAST

Posted on the 29th April 2009

Birding friends from Pretoria visited this past week-end. (25 and 26 April 2009). After a very good lunch at the famous tin house restaurant on the beach at Paternoster we went to Jacobsbaai and Mauritzbaai to see the terns. There were not nearly as many terns as about three weeks ago, but we had excellent sightings of good numbers of Common, Swift, Sandwich and Antarctic Tern. Most of the Swift, Sandwich and Antarctic Terns were in breeding plumage. The Antarctic Terns are really stunning with full black caps (breeding plumage), grey upper wings, grey underparts and brilliant red bills and legs. A very noisy bunch!
